After months upon months of speculation, promoters for the Coachella Music Festival have announced the lineup for the 2011 edition. Billboard.com reports that Kings of Leon, Kanye West and the Strokes will headline this year's Coachella Music Festival, which will take place during the weekend of April 15-17. Coachella and its country music component, the Stagecoach Music Festival, which takes place a few weeks later, are both held in Indio, Calif. on Empire Polo Field.
Kings of Leon are slated to headline the first night of Coachella. The Tennessee rock quartet released their fifth album, Come Around Sundown, last October, and this is their first time headlining the music festival. Also on the first night of Coachella, music fans with Coachella Music Festival tickets will enjoy performances from alt-rock outfits the Black Keys and Interpol, U.K. electronica veterans the Chemical Brothers, Swedish pop star Robyn, Killers frontman Brandon Flowers and Lauryn Hill, who returned to the stage after a long hiatus with a tour last month.
As rumored, Arcade Fire will return to Coachella-the band performed at the desert music festival in 2007-to headline on Saturday, April 16, 2011. British folk band Mumford & Sons will also perform on Saturday, marking their biggest U.S. music festival gig. Also on Saturday, Australian dance duo Empire of the Sun, R&B singer Erykah Badu, cult rapper Lil' B and indie mainstay Animal Collection will perform.
The final day of Coachella 2011 will feature rapper Kanye West and New York-bred rock band the Strokes making their Coachella headlining debuts. West is expected to release a joint album titled Watch the Throne with fellow hip-hop heavyweight Jay-Z in March, while the Strokes' as-yet-untitled fourth album is set for a March 22 release. Also on Sunday, previously rumored performers Duran Duran and PJ Harvey will perform, as will indie rock band the National, U.K. pop import Tinie Tempah, electro-rock duo Ratatat, Canadian punk rock band Death From Above (reuniting after a 2006 split) and upstart rapper Wiz Khalifa.
This year's Coachella will feature a collaboration between the Creators Project and select headlining acts to curate a series of art installations on the festival grounds. According to the festival's official website, the Creators Project has also billed three bands from China, Korea and Brazil: New Pants, EE and Emicida, respectively.
Coachella kicks off music festival season, so it's no surprise that speculation over the lineup begins months before it is announced. Billboard.com reports that before the official lineup was revealed, rumors cropped up speculating that Daft Punk, Neil Young and the Rolling Stones would perform-although none of them are on the bill. The 2010 edition of the Coachella Music Festival, which took place April 16-18, 2010, featured headlining performances by Jay-Z, Muse and Gorillaz. The Dead Weather, Matt & Kim, Muse, Gossip, Vampire Weekend, Hot Chip, Fever Ray, Phoenix and more all performed. The 2009 edition featured performance by the Killers, the Cure, the Black Keys, Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Cage the Elephant, MSTRKRF, Thievery Corporation and others.
